Audi Sport is entering the RS 3 LMS in the WTCR-FIA World Touring Car Cup, supporting two partner teams.
The RS 3 LMS is a factory-built racer, designed to compete in series running the TCR ruleset. The touring car Audi looks like the widebody racers that battled in the DTM in the early 2000s, but this one is a little less extreme. Series rules put output at around 350 hp.
The first team will be Belguim-based Team WRT. The team is one of the most successful Audi customer teams from the last decade. The team is fielding two cars. One driven by three-time British Touring Car Champion Gordon Shedden, and the other by 2017 TCR International Series champ Jean-Karl Vernay. Both have been awarded Audi Sport driver status.
Comtoyou Racing will run Audi Sport driver Frederic Vervich in one car, and their other car will be split between three privateer drivers. Denis Dupont, Aurelien Panis, and Nathanel Berton.
We look forward to the strong competition in the new racing series which is an attractive stage for many manufacturers in touring car racing,” says Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport customer racing. “Our teams and drivers bring valuable experiences from touring car racing and other disciplines to the grid, so we intend to battle for the titles in the drivers’ and teams’ classifications.”
The WTCR-FIA World Touring Car Cup season starts April 7th in Marrakesh.
