Audi pulled the sheet on its first factory-backed Formula E entrant, the e-tron FE04.
Recently, Formula E has opened up the development rules, allowing teams and manufacturers to develop proprietary powertrains, minus batteries. So in order to achieve maximum efficiency and power, Audi’s engineers decided to use a single ratio transmission for the upcoming 2017/18 season. Audi didn’t offer many more details but did say the new motor and transmission are the centerpieces of the FE04
“Together with our technology partner Schaeffler, we have developed a completely new powertrain,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass. “You can immediately tell this by looking at the new carbon housing of the powertrain. The car also sounds different because we’re pursuing new avenues in technology.”
The team will shed the red, green, and yellow livery it wore under the Abt-Schaeffler banner, instead, wearing a much more German white and black scheme, with smatterings of Schaeffler green. Along with launching the new car, Audi also announced long-time-brand-man, and three-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner, Allan McNish as team principal after he spent last season with the team as a special advisor.
The car will make its on-track debut next week in Valencia, Spain, during the official Formula E pre-season tests, ahead of the season opener in Hong Kong on December 2, 2017.
