Hindsight is $2,020: NYC Thieves Target Luxury Car Side Mirrors

Parking your baby in NYC? Well, along with the risk of dings, scratches, bird poops, junkies, and Avenger-related damage there’s a new and exciting thing to worry about: side mirror thieves.

, thieves struck 19 times between March 1 and April 26, with 14 of those happening on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

The cars targeted were by and large German and all were from luxury cars. That makes sense because many Audis, BMWs, and Benzes come with cameras in the mirrors which raises their value to between $1,500 and $2,000.

“This is a local pattern in Manhattan North and does not appear to be a citywide condition,” an NYPD . The thieves “remove both side-view mirrors from luxury automobiles. It is likely the mirrors are being stolen in order to re-sell them.”

The NYPD says the detective bureau is investigating the situation and that additional officers are being deployed during the midnight shift (when the mirror thieves are likeliest to strike) to help address it.

“People tend to ignore car alarms nowadays, but if you hear one going off in the middle of the night, take a look, and if you see something suspicious, call 911,” Deputy Inspector Timothy Malin told The Post.

So next time you park your luxury car uptown, be sure to check your mirrors.
